Zcash (ZEC) — Privacy Coin Command Center

Zcash is mid-way through its most consequential year: shielded-pool adoption at record highs, an Orchard supply-integrity scare resolved via the turnstile accounting mechanism, and the Ironwood network upgrade targeting activation around July 21, 2026 at block height 3,417,100. This dashboard tracks price/volume, chain activity, shielded-pool dynamics, the upcoming upgrade, and how ZEC stacks up against privacy-coin peers. Last research refresh: 2026-07-03.

⏱ Ironwood Countdown

Target height: 3,417,100

Most recent observed height: ~3,398,306 (per CipherScan live explorer scrape, 2026-07-03)

~18,794 blocks remaining → at Zcash's ~75s target block time, ≈16.3 days — consistent with dev Sean Bowe's public estimate of ~July 21, 2026 (per Odaily, tier2, 2026-07-03). Single scrape, not a live RPC feed — refresh close to activation.

Price, Volume & On-Chain Trend

ZEC has been the standout privacy-coin performer this cycle. Below: price/mcap trend, ZEC trading volume, ZEC/BTC pair strength, and daily active addresses/transactions.

🔒 Turnstile, Migration & Ironwood — Priority Tracking Section

⚠️ DefiLlama's warehouse does not track Zcash's shielded-pool balances, turnstile flows, migration rates, or shielded-transaction share — every figure below is sourced from external research/community trackers and is explicitly timestamped and tiered (tier-1 official vs. unverified third-party). Chain TVL has been removed from this dashboard — ZEC is not a DeFi chain and its TVL figure is not a meaningful metric.

Turnstile Balance & Shielded Pool Tracker (refresh each load)

Mechanism (tier-1, Project Tachyon / Zcash Foundation forum): the turnstile is Zcash's built-in accounting mechanism — every pool's balance is publicly tallied, and consensus rules forbid withdrawing more ZEC from a pool than has ever entered it, letting anyone audit circulating supply even though shielded balances stay private.

Latest readings (all unverified third-party, conflicting — treat as directional):

  • CipherScan (live scrape, retrieved 2026-07-03): Shielded Pool ≈ 4.41M ZEC; Privacy Score 29/100; Shielded TXs share 17.9%; all-time total TXs 17.8M.
  • ZEC Stats (as of 2026-06-29): shielded supply 4,417,951 ZEC (26.3% of supply, ≈$1.7B), up from 19.6% a year ago; Orchard alone holds 3,771,090 ZEC (+65% YoY).
  • zkonomics.com (retrieved 2026-07-03): shielded supply ≈5.12M ZEC (31.13%, ≈$2.06B); net flow into shielded pools: +756.0K ZEC (24h), +626.0K ZEC (7d), -36.3K ZEC (30d).

The three trackers disagree on exact shielded-supply size (4.41M vs 5.12M ZEC) due to differing methodology/pool scope — none is DefiLlama-verified. Issued supply remains ~16.79M of the 21M cap (tier-1, on schedule).

Migration Rate — Transparent→Shielded & Legacy→Orchard (updated readings, not a single snapshot)

Most recent (as of 2026-06-29, ZEC Stats, unverified): shielded share of total supply is 26.3%, up from 19.6% one year ago and 6.1% five years ago; Orchard pool has grown +65% YoY to 3,771,090 ZEC and is now the dominant shielded pool; daily transactions average 4,491/day (+104% YoY, -16% over 3 months).

Latest flow reading (retrieved 2026-07-03, zkonomics.com, unverified): net flow into shielded pools was +756.0K ZEC (24h) and +626.0K ZEC (7d), but -36.3K ZEC (30d) — suggesting a recent acceleration into shielded pools as the Ironwood activation approaches, reversing a mild net outflow over the trailing month.

Superseded baseline (Pine Analytics Q1 2026 report, published 2026-04-17, low-trust aggregator): shielded holdings grew ~5.9% in Q1 2026 (~288K net new ZEC shielded), with Orchard absorbing nearly all of it (+~300K ZEC) while Sapling (-12K) and Sprout (-50) kept bleeding out. This figure is now ~2.5 months stale — the June/July readings above supersede it.

Ironwood Audit / Formal Verification Status

Status: IN PROGRESS — not yet complete (as of 2026-07-03).

  • Per Project Tachyon blog and the Zcash Community Forum (tier-1): independent audits and formal verification of the patched Orchard zk-SNARK circuit are underway, led by Tachyon and Valar Group, building on security research from Taylor Hornby (funded by Shielded Labs) who found the original soundness bug.
  • Per Zcash dev Sean Bowe, reported by Odaily (tier2, 2026-07-03): "all consensus rule changes have been implemented and are currently in the audit phase"; formal verification of the Ironwood SNARK system is running in parallel.
  • Per TokenPost (low-trust aggregator, 2026-06-12): multiple independent auditing firms plus AI-assisted security analysis are examining Orchard-related code; no critical issues reported so far.
  • Shielded Labs (per CryptoNewsZ, unverified, 2026-07-03) reiterated security remains the "primary concern" and audits are ongoing alongside ecosystem testing.

No organization has yet issued a public completion notice — treat as in-progress until Shielded Labs / ZODL / the Zcash Foundation say otherwise.

Wallet / Client Readiness for Turnstile-Ironwood Migration

Per Sean Bowe (Odaily, tier2, 2026-07-03): wallet readiness is the primary open risk for on-time activation, though the team does not view it as sufficient reason to delay, citing ample testnet time and fallback paths.

Upgrades — Ironwood Network Upgrade

Ironwood introduces a new shielded pool (built on Orchard, with additional formal verification and independent audits) and hardens the turnstile mechanism to restore full supply-verification confidence following an Orchard soundness-bug disclosure in June 2026 (developers state the bug was remediated before any confirmed exploitation, per Project Tachyon, tier-1). Per Zodl and the Zcash Community Forum (tier-1), activation is targeted for late July 2026 (dev estimate: ~July 21, per Sean Bowe/Odaily, tier2, 2026-07-03), following zcashd end-of-support at block height 3,417,100 — the team says it is prepared to delay activation or extend zcashd support if security reviews require it. Existing Orchard receiver addresses will continue to work post-upgrade. Testnet activation for Ironwood was slated for 2026-07-04 per CryptoNewsZ (unverified, 2026-07-03).

Explicit deltas (tx-share only): ZecWatch vs ZODL ≈ +27.2pp; ZecWatch vs CipherScan ≈ -41.4pp; ZODL vs CipherScan ≈ -68.6pp. These three trackers span Feb–Jul 2026 and likely use different methodologies (all-tx vs. value-weighted vs. snapshot window) — none should be read as the single authoritative shielded-tx share. Separately, the 2026 YTD average per ZecWatch sits at 40.2%, and shielded supply share (a related but distinct metric from shielded tx share) is ~26–31% depending on tracker.

Privacy-Coin Competitive Landscape

How ZEC stacks up against the other major privacy-focused chains by market cap, price, and 24h trading volume (DefiLlama-tracked token data):

RankTokenPrice (USD)Market Cap (USD)24h Volume (USD)
1Zcash (ZEC)$448.02$7.51B$425.3M
2Monero (XMR)$318.37$5.98B$92.9M
3Dash (DASH)$35.48$452.7M$71.3M
4Horizen (ZEN)$4.26$77.4M$11.2M
5Secret (SCRT)$0.046$15.9M$6.8M

ZEC leads the privacy-coin cohort by a wide margin on both market cap (~1.26x Monero, the closest peer) and 24h volume (~4.6x Monero's).

Exchange Flows & ZEC-Specific Derivatives Positioning

DefiLlama's warehouse does not track per-token CEX net inflow/outflow for ZEC (CEX metrics are exchange-level only), nor ZEC-specific perp funding/OI (perps metrics are venue-level, not per-underlying-token). Ahead of the Ironwood activation, third-party derivatives aggregators (all unverified, independent scrapes at different moments amid a volatile price — treat as directional, not reconciled):

  • CoinGlass (retrieved 2026-07-03): ZEC aggregate perp Open Interest ≈ $1.10B; price snapshot $503.51 (-2.02% in that scrape).
  • JustScreener (retrieved 2026-07-03, different snapshot, price $404.51): ZEC perp OI ≈ 1.7M ZEC (~$677M); average funding rate across 8 exchanges ≈ +0.0100% (longs paying shorts — consistent with net-bullish leveraged positioning).
  • Loris Tools (retrieved 2026-07-03): largest ZEC perp venues by OI — Binance (~$254M), OKX (~$394M), Hyperliquid (~$188M), Bybit (~$80M).

The two OI readings ($1.10B vs $677M) and prices ($503 vs $404) diverge because of different scrape timing during a fast-moving market — corroborate directly before trading on either. No verified spot exchange net-flow (inflow/outflow) figure for ZEC is currently available. For CEX-level spot/derivative volume context, see the CEX volume table below.
